In the year 1975, "The Mighty Class of ’65" organized a class reunion. The word of their plans spread quickly and most of those it reached made the commitment to attend the reunion. As old friends and classmates gathered, nostalgia permeated the air. The reunion was a definite success! As a result, the consensus among those who experienced this special weekend at the "Pines" was to hold a reunion annually. Consequently, the National Pine Forge Academy Alumni Association was born.
Eldridge Edgecombe was elected the first President of the Alumni Association and served 1975-1977. George Sampson was chosen to be the Vice President, Cynthia Poole Gibson and Lorraine (Thomas) Ricks were selected to serve as the Secretary and the Treasurer, respectively. Elton Lester was elected Parliamentarian. The initial endeavor of the National PFA Alumni Association (NPFAAA) was to locate the hundreds of Pine Forge Academy graduates throughout the United States and beyond, informing them of the newly established NPFAAA and soliciting their support. George Sampson succeeded Eldridge Edgecombe as President and served from 1977 to 1979. During his tenure, Cynthia Poole-Gibson was the Vice President and Shelton Palmer, the Treasurer. The focus of this leadership was to grow the organization and to make every effort to ensure that a Homecoming would be held every year on Labor Day Weekend. Samuel H. Turner Sr. was elected as the 3rd NPFAAA President serving from 1979 to 1987. Mr. Turner founded the Pine Forge Academy Annual Concert Series a fundraising event for the Academy. The first concert was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in honor of the well-known singer and songwriter, Eleanor Wright. Subsequent concerts honored former principals and faculty of Pine Forge Academy. The concert series produced considerable revenue for the Academy, as much as $40,000 in one concert. It was also during Mr. Turner’s term of office that the local chapters of Pine Forge Academy Alumni were developed across the country. W. Wendell Cheatham served two terms as President of the NPFAAA, 1987 to 1990 and from 1994 to 1997. Dr. Cheatham sponsored the Pine Forge Academy Concert Choir on a Southern California tour to make prominent the school and to attract students during a period of enrollment decline. He originated the office of Executive Director of the Alumni Association and convinced Elder Daniel Davis to become the organization’s first Executive Director. The "Miracle Million Campaign" was sponsored, during Dr. Cheatham’s term. The goal was to raise endowment funds for the Alumni Association and the Academy. |
Matriculating through the hallowed halls of Pine Forge Academy is the common thread that binds us together. It is what keeps us connected; therefore, we exist because of you. When the Class of 1965, under the leadership of class president Eldridge Edgecombe, united to celebrate their 10th anniversary in 1975, it was the impetus of the organization that has existed since that time. The National Pine Forge Academy Alumni Association is here to keep those precious bonds of friendship tight and to keep the eternal flame burning at our alma mater. We want to hear from you, laugh with you, cry with you, and most importantly we want to applaud you. Your support, ideas, suggestions, and comments are encouraged. |
